1981 Inventions DRV Full Range Overdrive
Description
The 1981 Inventions DRV is a highly dynamic overdrive, distortion, and preamp pedal created in collaboration with Jon Ashley of Bondi Effects. Loosely inspired by a vintage 1985 Whiteface ProCo RAT but heavily re-engineered for a more nuanced, modern voice, the DRV packs dual independent circuits—one for a distinct distortion structure and another for a fixed-level preamp boost—into a sleek, boutique chassis. It excels particularly at lower gain and boost settings, offering a warm, articulate midrange punch and a ribbon-microphone-like thickness that maintains remarkable note definition even under heavy saturation or complex chords.
- Circuit Type: Dual-circuit design featuring a distortion stage and a preamp boost
- Inspiration: Revised and refined architecture based on vintage Whiteface RAT-style circuits
- Controls: DRV (adjusts drive intensity and compression), CUT (high-pass filter shaping upper frequencies), and VOL (controls output level and preamp push)
- Internal Voltage: Internal voltage regulator running the circuit at 18V for increased headroom while utilizing a standard 9V DC power supply
- Bypass: True Bypass switching
- Power Requirements: Standard 9V DC center-negative power supply (battery operation not typically supported due to internal regulation/design)
- Enclosure: High-grade custom steel chassis with unique UV-printed or painted finishes
- Build Origin: Built in the USA
