Lalo Symphonie Espagnol, Op.21 - Violin & Piano
Description
Édouard Lalo’s Symphonie espagnole in D Minor, Op. 21 is a thrilling and colorful romantic masterwork for solo violin and orchestra. Despite its symphonic title, this 1874 composition functions entirely as a five-movement violin concerto, celebrated for its fiery Iberian rhythms and supreme technical demands.
Lalo, a French composer of distant Spanish descent, wrote the piece specifically for his close friend, the legendary Spanish violin virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate. The work premiered in Paris on February 7, 1875, to instant acclaim. It spearheaded a major wave of Spanish-themed classical music across Europe, predating the premiere of Georges Bizet's Carmen by exactly one month.
